Locations: Espoo, Oulu or Tampere
Job area: Data-driven solutions
Applications by May 15, 2018
Research professor position is open at VTT in the following field of activity: model- and simulation-based systems engineering, including principles, methods, processes and tools, with application domains of computational research, development and innovation, process plant engineering and product development.
Strategic background
Finland has a strong and positive reputation in technology development, and in design and engineering. These are the backbones of our success and the enablers for Finland to keep and strengthen our innovation and technology based industry.
The fast progress in digitalisation and new technological opportunities require the Finnish industry to keep track on the new enabling key technologies and the new ways of doing design and engineering. The Industry 4.0 development provides new opportunities while increasing competition within the technology sector. It is crucial for Finland to follow this progress and pick up the most promising technologies, methods and concepts, and adopt them to our industry and business. In this, VTT has an important role as an applied research and innovation organisation.
Systems engineering is a general concept of designing and engineering typically large and complex systems, whether they are physical or software systems, or they combine elements from many domains, such as cyber-physical systems. A design and engineering process has usually contradicting requirements: at the same time, the process should produce technically requirements fulfilling results that differentiate the product or system from the competitors, but the process should be done in minimal effort within minimal time to save costs and to get to market of production as fast as possible. This requires the best methods, tools and processes to be applied and engineering and design.
Computational approach has proven to be efficient and, at the same time, fast way of doing engineering of complex systems. It enables efficient parallelisation of the design and engineering process, and allows even detailed design of the product or system without physical prototypes. Simulation, as one of the components in the computational approach, has been applied for decades and there are a wide variety of solutions and tools available for numerous engineering needs, and the steadily continuing progress in computing technology is well supporting this trend. As the computational engineering methods and tools are widely available for anyone, differentiating in the field of engineering requires new and innovative actions, and strong contribution from research. New directions of doing this may involve, e.g., data mining, machine learning and prescriptive analytics.
We expect you to have
The successful candidate would have good scientific and innovation merits in the areas of systems engineering and research, as well as in the development and innovation of products or processes. In addition, versatile technical expertise covering multiple domains – e.g. IoT, artificial intelligence, process plant engineering, material engineering, or software engineering – together with experience on computational methods and tools are appreciated. The candidate should also have demonstrated ability to innovate visionary software systems and have strong experience in international and national collaboration. Proven capability to build, lead and inspire research groups as well as large EU and national projects are expected. Industrial experience and industrial and academic stakeholder contact network are required. The candidate is expected to have doctoral degree.
As a person you are
We are looking for forward-looking, proactive, innovative, and collaborative person who has good communication and networking skills.
